Death Boxes are crates dropped by dead players, containing every item they had when they died, as well as a banner card squadmates can use to respawn them.
Death Boxes can also be dropped by flyers that roam around Kings Canyon and Storm Point. Death Boxes are also placed at a random spot in Prowler Nests on Storm Point. These Death Boxes carry loot, and their owner appeas as someone from the player's friend list, Respawn Entertainment/EA staff, or dataminers.
- The Death Box's menu organizes items in order of weapons → ammo → gear → regen items → grenades → attachments → survival items.
- Death Boxes glow the color of the highest tier item they contain.
- If a Death Box is emptied, and there is no banner card to be retrieved, the Death Box will vanish.
- Death Boxes spawn able to be affected by physics. They then become permanently stationary after not moving for around five seconds.
- If a player dies by falling off the map, their Death Box will be placed at the nearest possible spot on accessible land. However, if a Death Box falls off the map, there is no way to retrieve its contents. Death Boxes may also spawn inside a Replicator or Care Package, making it more difficult to access the Death Box.
- When a player is respawned, they can see a faint blue outline around their Death Box, visible through walls.
- The top of Death Boxes contain screens showing the dead player's banner frame, banner pose, and username. Their badges are also displayed, cycling one at a time at the bottom of the screen.
- The
Shield Core the player had when they died is replenished fully.
Some Legends' abilities can interact with Death Boxes:
- With Crypto's tactical ability,
Surveillance Drone, he can remotely recover his Squadmates' banners when interacting their Death Boxes.
- Ash's passive ability,
Predator's Pursuit, lets her see the locations of Death Boxes on her map if the players died less than 3 minutes ago.
- With Alter's passive ability,
Gift From The Rift, she can see nearby Death Boxes through walls and take one item from each (except
Shield Cores) from a distance.
Cosmetics
Death Box cosmetics alter the appearance of enemy Death Boxes upon killing them. All Death Box cosmetics other than One Winged Angel require owning their associated Heirloom before they can be purchased.
Trivia
- When playing the Heatwave game mode during the
Sun Squad Collection Event, Death Boxes appeared as cooler boxes covered in stickers.
- When a character dies or is injured in the lore, sometimes a Death Box appears on the map. A notable example is when Forge was killed; his Death Box appeared in the Sorting Factory in World's Edge, where his death took place. Looting the Death Box provided the Steel Cut weapon charm.
Bugs
- There is a bug that makes it so nothing can be taken out of Death Boxes or
Black Market Boutiques. It briefly looks like the item was taken, only for it to reappear in the Death Box or Black Market. It is unknown why this happens. When it does, players cannot ping items or acknowledge teammates' pings.
- Death Boxes can fall through or otherwise clip through transparent floors.
