YingLing Lui (Chinese: 雷盈靈; Lui Ying Ling) better known as Alter, is a Legend introduced in Season 21 of Apex Legends. A dimension-hopping trickster, she traveled to the world of the Apex Games to witness the end of another world.

Background

YingLing Lui keeps her origins a secret, with her age, home world and the circumstances under which she acquired cybernetic Void tech unknown. After using her phase abilities to depart her native dimension, she began travelling between universes under the name "Alter", stealing, fighting and taking on mercenary work for nothing but her amusement. Maintaining the secrecy of her past, she would share different outlandish tales when asked who she was by her victims, with such stories including that she was trained from birth as a warrior before being betrayed, an orphan, a hunter following the Old Ways, a talented martial artist who became a football champion, a being born from stone who fought to obtain immortality, a reigning Mahjong champion, a leader of monsters, and raised by birds.

Being able to travel to a new universe whenever she desired would ultimately cause Alter to lose any sense of morality or responsibility for her actions, and she additionally developed a fascination with worlds facing total destruction, believing that they presented a unique opportunity to watch people reveal their "true selves" during catastrophe. Alter would search out these dying universe, sometimes even actively helping send them to ruin, but over time began to notice a common cause for the destruction: Mary Somers.

On one occasion, Alter infiltrated a secure facility and stole a shard of the Ark, defeating multiple teams of security personnel in the process.

Trouble on the Horizon

In the year 2735 in the universe of the Apex Games, an unknown version of the floating city of Olympus began appearing and disappearing out of portals in various locations around the Outlands, until one of these emergences occurred in the same physical space as the Stasis Net satellite above Boreas' moon Cleo, destroying both objects and allowing the colony of Hope to float away from the moon and towards the planet below.

This event appeared to herald the arrival of Alter in that universe, who acquired a card granting entry in the Apex Games and then sought out the native incarnation of Mary Somers, AKA Horizon, who was at the time working on developing a time machine in the city of Suotamo on Gaea, in the hopes of being reunited with her son Newton. Infiltrating the building where Somers was based, Alter used her Void abilities to surreptitiously steal away both the non-functional time-travel device and Horizon's fellow Apex Legends Mirage and Lifeline, before placing all three at the nearby Humbert Labs facility to draw in her target.

Upon Horizon's arrival, Alter announced her presence and asked if the scientist wanted to see her son again, before intentionally crashing an aerial drone into the Humbert facility, causing a chain reaction of toxic gas leaks across the campus. After defeating Lifeline and Mirage's attempts to subdue her, Alter continued to taunt Horizon, alluding to the dangerous potential of the scientist's interdimensional doppelgangers and deliberately escalating a fight that eventually culminated in Somers pointing a gun at Alter's head. At this point, a satisfied Alter announced that she was not Horizon's enemy, and claimed that she possessed what was needed to complete the time-travel device and get the scientist back to Newton. The Void warrior showed Horizon her Apex card by way of announcing where she could be found, and then retreated into the gas continuing to envelop the facility.

• Alter is Chinese. The anglicisation of her name, as well as her ability to speak Cantonese, implies ancestry from Hong Kong.
• Her last name, 雷, means thunder. Her given name is composed of the character of 盈 (filled, increase) and 靈 (spirit).
• Alter is the only Legend whose year of birth and age is unknown.
