Talos is a planet in the Outlands. It is the location of World's Edge, and the home planet of Bloodhound.
Description
Talos is the third planet from the sun in the Prime System, placing it in the same system as Solace, Gaea, and Psamathe.[1] It is primarily a volcanic planet, though much of the surface is cool enough for forests and wildlife to live comfortably. Local fauna includes prowlers, goliaths[2], and a very rare creature called the óséður.[3] Talos has a very small human population, mostly living in secluded villages unknown to the rest of the Outlands. There are also rustic resorts favored by wealthy tourists from Psamathe or Gaea.[4] Politically, the planet falls under Syndicate jurisdiction, but like Solace there is no dedicated police force.
History
Talos was discovered in the 2300s, along with the rest of the Outlands. Initially the planet was considered mostly uninhabitable; although some small, rustic villages popped up in secluded areas, Talos went several centuries without any major cities or facilities being installed. This changed in the late 2600s, when massive stores of branthium[3] were discovered under the planet's volcanic surface, prompting the IMC to construct mining outposts such as World's Edge, the planet's only city. This city used a series of coolant towers to harden the volcanic fields for mining, and to make the city more comfortable for its residents - but in 2703, an accident in the New Dawn coolant plant coated the area in a lethal flash freeze. World's Edge was abandoned, and the IMC left the planet entirely following the end of the Frontier War.
Following the destruction of the Repulsor in Kings Canyon, the Apex Games were relocated to World's Edge in 2733. Soon after, Hammond Robotics installed a Planet Harvester in the city to collect the branthium the IMC never mined; this and Hammond's other new facilities cause immense damage to the planet, opening lava streams and chasms in several areas. Local villages, such as Bloodhound's, attempted to rebel against Hammond, but ultimately were forced to relocate as the planet became uninhabitable.[5] The Mercenary Syndicate later installed a museum in World's Edge to distract from controversy.[6]
Locations
- World's Edge - Formerly an IMC mining outpost with the Capital City at the center, now a stage for the Apex Games.
- Phase Runner - An abandoned prototype phase runner located at the peak of a mountain. It now serves as an arena for auxiliary Apex Games events such as the Arenas.
- Hephaestus Station - An automatic branthium-processing located among magma flows, affectionately known as "Overflow". It additionally serves as a stadium for the Arenas as well as other auxiliary Apex Games events.[7]
- Bloodhound's village - A small community of hunters who spurn modern technology, located near World's Edge. In 2734, facing an increasingly hostile climate, the village's residents relocated to the vicinity of Storm Point on Gaea.[5]
