Titanfall 2 is a first-person shooter created by Respawn Entertainment and released on 28 October 2016.
Multiplayer
Players spend a roughly equal amount of time controlling pilots and titans. Pilots have highly customizable loadouts in addition to high mobility via wall-running and double jumping. Every pilot is armed with multiple weapons, a tactical ability, grenades, and other kits and boosts. Titans can be called in after accumulating enough points, and are 7 to 10 meters tall, have significantly more health and firepower, and have predetermined ability sets and weapons based on which of seven titans you play as.
In multiplayer, there are several gamemodes to play:
- Attrition - The standard 6v6 deathmatch mode. Each team accumulates points by killing enemy players or NPC Grunts, Spectres, Stalkers, and Reapers. First team to 650 points wins.
- Bounty Hunt - Rather than immediately earning points, kills award credits, which must be turned in at banks to count towards your team's victory.
- Amped Hardpoint - Teams earn points by maintaining control of designated zones on the map.
- Capture the Flag - Self explanatory.
- Pilot vs. Pilot - No Titans allowed.
- Titan Brawl - Only Titans allowed.
- Last Titan Standing - Similar to Titan Brawl, but played over multiple rounds with no respawning. Pilots are allowed, but a team loses a round when all titans are destroyed.
- Live Fire - A pilots-only deathmatch played over multiple rounds with no respawning. Players can also capture a neutral flag to win the round.
- Coliseum - A 1v1 pilots-only mode where first pilot to 3 kills wins. Accessing this gamemode costs Coliseum Tickets, or 10 credits.
- Frontier Defense - A unique PvE mode in which four players fight off waves of AI forces.
Singleplayer
The campaign is set five years after the first Titanfall, and eighteen years before Apex Legends. The Militia has gained significant ground in the Frontier War, and IMC forces are on the defensive. The player character is Militia rifleman Jack Cooper, who becomes a pilot through the course of the story. There are nine missions in the campaign:
- The Pilot's Gauntlet - Captain Tai Lastimosa guides Cooper through a simulated pilot training exercise.
- BT-7274 - IMC forces, backed by the Apex Predators, defeat Cooper's squadron on Typhon. Before dying, Tai Lastimosa authorizes Cooper to link with his titan, BT-7274, and Cooper scavenges batteries from the crashed MCS James MacAllan to power BT.
- Blood and Rust - Cooper and BT make their way through a water reclamation facility to reconvene with Major Anderson. The two end up fighting and killing Kane, an Apex Predator who pilots a Scorch, and recover his comms unit to eavesdrop on IMC communications.
- Into the Abyss - BT is captured inside the World Foundry, a massive underground housing factory. After being reunited, the two fight Ash and her Ronin-class titan.
- Effect and Cause - Cooper and BT find Major Anderson's body in an abandoned ARES research facility. Cooper experiences several time anomalies while traversing the facility, and eventually comes to control them with a device recovered from Anderson. Traveling back and forth from the past, Cooper discovers the IMC's Fold Weapon, capable of destroying entire planets.
- The Beacon - Cooper and BT reconvene with a company of Militia rifleman to commandeer an interstellar beacon to send the rest of the Militia their intel. In doing so, they attract the attention of the IMC, and have to fight Richter and his Tone-class titan.
- Trial By Fire - The Militia sends massive backup to Typhon to assault an IMC airfield. They are unsuccessful in preventing the IMS Draconis from taking off with the Fold Weapon's power source, the Ark.
- The Ark - With help from the 6-4, the Militia sends ships to chase the Draconis. Cooper and the 6-4 infiltrate the IMS Malta and deactivate its turrets, and with BT fights Viper and his Northstar-class titan. BT manages to grab the Ark and the Draconis is taken down, but Cooper and BT are captured by Kuben Blisk.
- The Fold Weapon - Kuben Blisk and Slone destroy BT to retrieve the Ark from inside him. Cooper manages to escape with BT's SERE kit, allowing him to put BT into a new chassis. The two fight Slone and her Ion-class titan and attempt to stop the new Fold Weapon from being activated. Blisk escapes, but not before complimenting Cooper and offering him a position in the Apex Predators. A damaged BT detonates his core to destroy the Ark, throwing Cooper to safety in the process. The Fold Weapon backfires and destroys Typhon. Cooper and the other Militia pilots make it out safe and return to their HQ on Harmony.
Returning Content
Many of Titanfall 2's content returned in Apex Legends.
- Most weapons were carried over from Titanfall 2, with the exception of the Prowler, Peacekeeper, HAVOC, Sentinel, 30-30 Repeater, and Bocek Compound Bow.
- Many weapons were renamed to indicate a new model: R-201 → R-301, P2016 → P2020, R-97 → R-99, Double Take → Triple Take, G2A5 → G7 Scout
- The Charge Rifle's function has been modified with a tracking laser to make it less specialized for titan combat. The HAVOC's Selectfire mode is more similar to Titanfall 2's Charge Rifle.
- Many optics, including the HCOGs, AOGs, and Threat Scopes, were turned into loot items.
- The Frag Grenade is largely the same as in Titanfall. The Arc Star has the function of Titanfall 2's Arc Grenade and the shuriken form of the Firestar or Gravity Star. The Thermite Grenade has a similar function as the Firestar, but makes a line like Scorch's Firewall ability.
- Many legend abilities are derived from tactical abilities, boosts, and other functions in Titanfall 2.
- Pathfinder's Grappling Hook is adapted from the Grapple tactical ability. Like in Titanfall, it has a dynamic cooldown relative to how far you grapple.
- Rampart's Amped Cover is adapted from the A-Wall tactical ability. A more sturdy base has been added to Rampart's version.
- Octane's Stim and Swift Mend are adapted from the Stim tactical ability. Titanfall 2's Stim provided both an instant speed boost and instant health regeneration.
- Wraith's Into the Void is adapted from the Phase Shift tactical ability. Wraith's version leaves a blue trail, and cannot instantly kill enemies by reappearing inside of them.
- Mirage's Psyche Out is adapted from the Holo Pilot ability, and his Life of the Party is similar to the Holo Pilot Nova boost. His Now You See Me... is adapted from the Cloak tactical ability.
- Although the Pulse Blade tactical ability doesn't directly return in any form, both Bloodhound and Crypto can reveal enemies through walls in the same form.
- Valkyrie's abilities are inspired by Northstar's flight and missile abilities, though none act in the same way.
- Fuse's Knuckle Cluster is adapted from Northstar's Cluster Missile.
- Gibraltar's Dome of Protection is identical in shape to the dome shields that protect titans that have just landed. His Gun Shield is similar to the one used by Legion.
- Horizon's Black Hole is very similar in function to the Gravity Star.
- The shield from Lifeline's Combat Revive is identical in shape to the Hard Cover boost.
- Many of Apex Legends' map features and props have been reused from Titanfall 2.
- The initial dropship is a scaled-down version of the IMS Draconis.
- The dropship that brings back respawned teammates is the same dropship that drops off and picks up players in multiplayer matches.
- Respawn Beacons use a red version of the Banks from the Bounty Hunt gamemode.
- Ziplines return, now with a bright yellow color.
- Loot Ticks are a friendly version of the enemy Ticks that would run up to players and explode in the campaign.
- The device seen when picking up squadmates' banner cards is the same device used to activate boosts.
- The device that Lifeline uses to call in her Care Packages is the same device used for detonating satchels.
- Care Packages are similar to the lifeboat escape pods seen in the campaign.
- Many buildings on Kings Canyon are carried over from the multiplayer map Eden.
