Lore

The Sentinel is a bolt action sniper rifle, effective at medium to long range and retrofitted to solve a unique problem. Snipers for the Frontier Militia acted as lynchpins in many of the Titan War's initial conflicts, but their effectiveness was undercut by the mass mobilization of Titans by the IMC. Militia snipers realized that if they could destroy a Titan's energy shield, that would create an opportunity for ground troops to do significant damage to the chassis. The result of those efforts - the Sentinel - was outfitted with a charge port that allowed projectiles to be energized and interfere with energy shields on impact. It would ultimately fall out of favor in Titan warfare (replaced by the heavy-hitting Charge Rifle), but remains a destructive force against a variety of targets at distance.

The Sentinel ESR (Electromagnetic Sniper Rifle) is a dual-stage, electromagnetic actuated sniper rifle manufactured by Paradinha Arsenal. Rounds are chambered through the rear bolt action receiver and fired with a traditional closed bolt pin. The round is then accelerated with a muzzle velocity of 5km/s through the EM Propulsion system. This delivers a projectile with highly destructive kinetic energy to defeat the immediate effects of bullet drop over distances of 2km. This gives the weapon more accessibility and a faster cycle time than the Kraber .50-Cal Sniper in exchange for a little less lethality.[1]

The A-13 Sentry, Vantage's signature sniper rifle, was what laid the basis for the Sentinel's development.[2]

History

Trivia

  • The Sentinel is visible on the DUMMIEs back in Crypto's finisher "Drone Scan", when previewed in the Legends tab. This was a whole Season before the weapon was first revealed. As said by community coordinator Jason Garza on Reddit, he messed up while capturing the finisher, and it shipped with the weapon showing. He also said that he'd let the fans figure out what the weapon was[3].
  • Vantage has different first equip, draw, and holster animations when using a Sentinel, along with some voice lines.
  • A "5km/s" muzzle velocity, mentioned in the "Lore" section and quoted verbatim from the blurb included in the original concpt art, is likely an error. A speed of 5,000 m/s roughly equates to mach 14.5, which is more than 4 times faster than the current real-life record for the fastest small arms ammunition, held by .220 Swift at over 1,200 m/s. A projectile - any projectile - travelling at mach 14.5 would be astonishingly destructive, far beyond that of a Kraber shot, contrary to the source description.
