Backpacks are gear items which can be equipped to expand the inventory's size. It can be acquired in multiple rarities: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. At its highest rarity, it also provides the [Deep Pockets] perk. This increases the stack size for Shield Batteries, Med Kits, and Phoenix Kits by one each (i.e. one slot can hold two Phoenix Kits or three Shield Batteries/Med Kits).

Inventory

By default, the inventory has 10 slots, not counting slots for weapons and gear.

Patch notes 

August 09, 2022 Patch

• Added Deep Pockets Perk to Level 4 Backpack. Increases Shield Battery and Med Kit stack sizes from 2 to 3, and Phoenix Kit stack size from 1 to 2.
• Moved Guardian Angel Perk from Level 4 Backpack to Level 4 Knockdown Shield.

• Gold Backpack: Now has a unique sound when reviving.

March 09, 2021 Patch

• Gold Backpack: Players being revived by a gold backpack will have a crackle of energy—based on the tier of armor they wear—while the revive is taking place. They will also display the armor heal FX when the revive is finished.

• Reduced the number of Knockdown Shields, Helmets, and Backpacks that spawn in the world.

• Base inventory slots increased from 8 to 10.
• Common Backpack: expanded inventory to 12 slots.
• Rare Backpack: expanded inventory to 14 slots.
• Epic Backpack: expanded inventory to 16 slots.

• Gold Backpack: UI update to better convey to the player when they are using or being revived with the perk.

• Moved [Fast Use] perk from Level 4 Backpack to Level 4 Body Shield.
• Added [Guardian Angel] perk to Level 4 Backpack, restoring extra health and shields to revived squadmates.
